Intended use
As stated in the manufacturer's instructions for use, the closed suction catheter is supplied for airway suctioning of patients in clinical units. It is intended for patients who need suctioning, and it is operated by professional medical staff. The instructions state that there are no absolute contraindications.
The clinical reason for a closed system is continuity: suctioning can be performed without disconnecting the ventilator circuit. Keeping the circuit closed matters for ventilated patients, because disconnection interrupts ventilation and opens the airway to the room environment. The closed design also separates the catheter from the surrounding environment between uses, which is the mechanism behind the reduced cross-contamination risk described in the suctioning guides on this site.
Single use, sterilization, and shelf life
The product is for single use only and must not be re-sterilized. It is sterilized with ethylene oxide (EO) and carries a shelf life of 5 years from sterilization. These three statements belong to this product's instruction file only; they are not general promises for any other line on this site.
Storage conditions
Store the product in a ventilated, clean environment at a relative humidity of 45%–75%RH. Protect it from light, from squeezing and collision, from fire, and from corrosive gases. Storage conditions are part of the product's documented handling, and buyers who warehouse in humid or uncontrolled environments should confirm the storage requirements for their facility before ordering in bulk.
Closed design features
The design keeps the suction path closed during use. A protective sleeve covers the catheter and separates it from the environment, reducing contact with pathogens between suction passes. A cleaning tube and a cleaning valve allow the catheter to be rinsed without opening the system. Suction is controlled with a negative-pressure control switch or a rotary switch, depending on the variant. Self-locking (autolock) types and double-position switch types are both listed in the variant table.
Use warnings from the instructions
- Do not use the product if the packaging is damaged.
- Before use, check that the packaging is intact and inspect the appearance of the product.
- Use the product once only; do not re-sterilize it.
- Follow the clinical unit's own suctioning protocol and the instructions for use for the variant ordered.
